Black Friday is a once-a-year bargain bonanza that sees thousands of retailers slash prices. And it’s almost here again.

This time around, the global shopping event will be held on Friday November 25, 2022. If you’re looking forward to the Black Friday sales, you’re in the right place! We’ve rounded up everything you need to know to become a Black Friday master, including key dates for the sales, tips from bargain-hunting experts, and details on early Black Friday deals.

Black Friday was started in the United States as a way for retailers to drum-up extra sales ahead of the holidays. The one-day sales event would see millions of people queue up outside high street shops to secure the best Black Friday deals, dubbed “doorbusters”. Held on the first Friday after the Thanksgiving celebrations, Black Friday is no longer confined to the shores of the United States – it has become a global phenomenon.

Retailers in the UK and Australia now regularly see more interest in Black Friday sales compared with the more traditional Boxing Day discounts. As such, shops are increasingly saving their best discounts and deals for Black Friday over all other shopping events.

Black Friday isn’t restricted to a certain category of products, with thousands of categories discounted in the sales. From games consoles to kitchenware, garden to beauty, fitness to furniture, alcohol to broadband contracts …almost every online store gets involved in the Black Friday sale.

And some have already started to unleash discounts already!

Who will take part in Black Friday 2022?

Almost every online retailer takes part in the Black Friday sales, and this year promises to be no exception.

That said, there are a few big brands that refuse to take part in the bargain bonanza. Supermarket ASDA was one of the first supermarkets to embrace Black Friday back in 2013. However, the nationwide chain pulled the plug on all Black Friday sales in 2015 after some of its generous discounts sparked violence among shoppers clamouring to bag the best deals. ASDA has soften its stance a little in the intervening years, with some Black Friday discounts appearing in the 2021 sales …but it’s not returned to the 2013 levels.

M&S (Marks & Spencer) is another supermarket brand that doesn’t take part in the Black Friday sales. Although the brand usually features a number of deals on its website during the Christmas shopping spree, this usually has nothing to do with Black Friday itself.

It’s unlikely that Aldi will take part in Black Friday this year. Last year, an Aldi spokesperson told Express.co.uk: “We believe great prices should be offered every day, not just a Friday. Aldi’s prices are always unbeatable – whether it’s Black Friday, or any other day of the year.”

Although Apple does technically take part in the Black Friday sales, it never discounts any of its products. Instead, the company usually bundles a gift card that can be used on accessories, other Apple products, and subscriptions to services like Apple Music, Apple Arcade, and Apple TV+. The gift card value increases based on the cost of the product you’re buying, with MacBooks and iPad Pro models likely to unlock the biggest windfall.

Of course, you can rely on other stores like Amazon and Currys to slash prices on iPhone, AirPods, iPad, and more!

And that’s about it for the nonstarters. As you’d expect, the list of brands taking part in the Black Friday sales is much, much longer.

Some of the biggest retailers tipped to take part are:

Amazon UK is tipped to slash prices across all departments – with its own Fire TV, Echo, Kindle, and Ring video doorbells also expected to get huge price cuts

Currys usually extends the Black Friday sale across a big chunk of November, with discounts on flatscreen TVs, games consoles, kitchen gadgets and more

John Lewis & Partners might’ve retired its ‘never knowingly undersold’ slogan, but the brand still doesn’t like to be outdone in sales – so expect big discounts

Argos is a big proponent of Black Friday, with shoppers able to collect their discounts in-store or get them delivered to their home

When is Black Friday 2022?

Black Friday will be held on November 25, 2022.

Black Friday falls on a different day each year, since it always falls on the first Friday after the Thanksgiving celebrations have taken place in the United States. In previous years, the Black Friday sales have fallen on:

  • Friday November 26, 2021
  • Friday November 27, 2020
  • Friday November 29, 2019
  • Friday November 23, 2018
  • Friday November 24, 2017

With Black Friday scheduled for Friday November 25, you can expect Cyber Monday sales to start on November 28, 2022.

Why is it called ‘Black Friday’?

It’s not entirely clear. One of the prevailing theories is that it refers to retailers getting “out of the red” – referring to the financial losses incurred in the autumn and Thanksgiving bank holiday – “and into the black” during the sales event. However, this explanation is pretty widely debunked (not that’s stopped it spreading).

In reality, the phrase seems to originate in the 1960s with police officers in Philadelphia, who used the term “Black Friday” to describe the chaos as thousands of tourists descended onto the city to begin their holiday shopping. This would often coincide with an annual Army-Navy football game, resulting in huge unmanageable crowds.

At the time, retailers railed against the term by branding their discounts and deals as “Big Friday”. Now, 60 years later, it’s pretty clear which term captured the public’s imagination.

What happened last year?

Black Friday 2021 was an unusual event as global supply chains were still in chaos due to the lockdowns imposed in countries around the world to limit the spread of Covid-19. As a result, some discounted items suffered low stock levels. The Xbox Series X and Sony PS5 were both in very short supply, with shoppers desperate to get their hands on the latest games consoles ready to wrap under the Christmas tree.

Argos, Currys and Amazon all started their Black Friday sales in mid-November, extending the sales from a single day to a fortnight. Despite stock issues that plagued the sales, Black Friday generated £9.2 billion in sales which was 15% more than the year before. This year, it’s only set to be even bigger as supply issues have (largely) been resolved.

Black Friday 2022 predictions

Unfortunately, most retailers don’t share the exact date when they will be participating in the Black Friday sales.

However, shoppers can expect to see huge sales from Amazon UK, AO.com, ASOS, Dell, eBay, Very, John Lewis & Partners, Argos, Currys and Boots starting sometime in November 2022. We’ll update this Black Friday guide with the exact date as soon as they’re announced, so check back soon.

We know which brands will be taking part in the Black Friday deals, but what about the products to look for?

Research from AskGamblers shared with Express.co.uk has revealed that Air Fryers will be the most in-demand products on Amazon during the sales. With the efficiency of air fryers, these popular kitchen gadgets cost much, much less to run than traditional ovens – making these a great choice for those worried about spiralling electricity costs during the cost-of-living crisis. Not only affordable, but air fryers also use between 70-90% less oil than traditional fryers, but still result in crispy food.

There’s no need to wait until Black Friday itself as we’ve rounded up the available year-round. If you’re looking for a good model to enjoy, check out our . Some the best early discounts on air fryers are available below…

According to the data from AskGamblers, the second most popular product during the Black Friday 2022 sales is likely to be the Silentnight Comfort Control Electric Blanketwhich will only be more popular as the weather gets colder.

As always, we expect to see huge interest in some of the biggest consumer tech, including some of the most popular Apple products – iPhone, iPad, and AirPods. Black Friday expert tips and tricks

To get that long-awaited air fryer or iPhone, here are some top tips and tricks to aid you with your shopping and give you the best advantage on deals.

Make a wish list and budget

The easiest way to buy what you want is to make sure you know what you’re looking for. First figure out what you’re shopping for, have you just moved home and need a new TV or do you want to buy Christmas presents for friends and family ahead of holidays? Then, figure out what budget you would like to spend.

Create a list of products that you specifically want to buy for yourself or as a gift because this will help you not get lost in the amount of deals.

Doing this also helps to prevent you from buying products you don’t actually want or need. If you’re unsure of what product you want but know the type of item i.e an air fryer, it’s a good idea to do research ahead of the day on the top reviewed models out there. That way you can look out for discounts on the items and you won’t blindly spend on an air fryer that’s subpar in performance.

Sign up to Amazon Prime

If you want to be the first to shop Amazon’s Black Friday sale, you need to be an Amazon Prime member. Amazon Prime offers members exclusive 30 minute access to all Lightning Deals, which are hot products that are discounted for a few hours.

If you’re not an Amazon Prime member, you can sign up and enjoy a free 30 day trial here. The best time to sign up to Prime before the Black Friday shop opens is at the start of November. Plus, you can always cancel the trial after the event if you don’t want to enjoy the benefits that Amazon Prime offers.

Research and bookmark products

Once you know what product or deal you’re looking for, research all the available sites to see where it’s sold and have those bookmarked. The major retailers have a tendency to price match each other, but during Black Friday, some will offer more incentives like free gifts, free shipping or bundles. Express.co.uk will have be bringing you all the best deals but do have a look to see at all retailers available.

Older releases have the best savings

Black Friday is a time that retailers use to shift out the last of this year’s stock and while it’s a good idea to get a discount on new items, its also smart to buy products that were launched last year as older releases will be discounted for cheaper prices. For example, Shark launched the new Vertex Ultra Lightweight Cordless Stick Vacuum earlier in February and its fantastic for all home cleaning. However, the Shark Anti Hair Wrap Cordless Vacuum Cleaner is almost as good but more likely to have a bigger discount on Black Friday, making it the better saving.

Check for cashback

You can sometimes get cash back available on Black Friday deals but make sure to check with your credit or debit card. It’s a good idea for shopping on Black Friday as it’s a time you’ll be spending more money but it’s also good in general for online shopping.
